If asked, anyone who is in either of Mr. Bergquist's block classes could tell you what their next big project is: making our own Indie film. The students have to write a screenplay using the industry formatting standards, and eventually produce it into a real live short film. Bergquist has come up with a list of different kinds of shots to use in the movie, such as a long shot, a wide shot, and an extreme close up shot. The movie has to be at least 5 minutes long. Students will work in small groups, and choose the best screenplay to produce. Films will be shot outside of school hours, and edited on the Annex computers. All of the movies the class makes will be entered into the Raindance Short Film Contest once they are complete.

ONCE upon a time, in a land far, far, away there lived a young boy named Martin. Martin lived high up in a Sicamore tree with his mother, Julia, and his sister, Charity. They were a very happy little bunch. Martin was a green and brown lizard. Charity was a flying fish, and Julia was a food processor. One day, Martin decided to go to Costco to pick up some artichokes for his neighbor. He walked in through the big metal doors and flashed his Costco member card at the man at the door. He walked briskly through the aisles until he reached the produce He was walking through the dog food section when a big hairy tortilla chip jumped out at him, and pulled a burlap sack over Martins head.
"You're comin' with me." The tortilla chip said, lifting Martin over his shoulder. Martin noticed that the small amount of air inside the bag smelled funny, and soon he was passed out.
When he awoke, Martin was in a dark, plain room with a single window. He was sitting against a cement wall, his little butt on a cement floor. He felt scared. He started screaming 'HELP' at the top of his lungs. No one responded. Luckily, Martin was fluent in several different languages. He proceeded to screech for help in Portuguese, Cvecklaslavatian, Spanish, Hindu, Asianese, Sign Language, and Hawaiian. No one came. Suddenly, though, the door to the room burst open. The tortilla chip came in, and grabbed Martin by the ear.
"Listen, bud. You're gonna do what I say, when I say it. Don't ask questions."
"Okay." Martin whimpered. The tortilla chip led Martin out of the room, and soon the two of them were in a crowded pub, standing behind the bar.
"Your job is to shell peanuts." the tortilla chip explained "We are too cheap to buy peanuts, so we grow them out back. You take the shells off, and fill these bowls with them," he gestured to a tall stack of blue paper cups.
"Got it." Martin said confidently. He began taking the shells off peanuts. After about 36 hours Martins hands were getting very sore. He had not been allowed to take a break, and was standing in a puddle of his own pee. This was when Martin decided that we was going to try to escape this hell. He made the dash towards the door but a giant foot came down on his head. His brains squirted out his ears and he died.

Alpacas are members of the camelid family, which includes alpacas, Dromedary and Bactrian camels, llamas, vicunas, and guanacos. Alpaca are indigenous to the Andes Mountains of South America, primarily in Peru, Chile and Bolivia. There they developed into hardy animals with thick fleece to withstand the cold, living on sparse vegetation. Alpacas are smaller than llamas, and are therefore not used as pack animals like llamas. Alpacas are bred primarily for their soft luxurious fleece, which is very similar to cashmere. In 1984 some specially selected alpacas were brought into the United States and Canada. The importation of alpacas was stopped in 1998. The alpacas that are here are the only breeding stock to improve the bloodlines. This makes breeding them a good investment opportunity. There are currently about 50,000 alpacas in the U.S. There are two types of alpacas, the suri (su-ree) and the huacaya (wah-kai-yuh). The suri accounts for only about 5% of alpacas in the US. It has fiber that grows quite long and forms what look like dreadlocks. The huacaya, which is by far the greater number of alpacas, has a shorter and more dense fleece. This fleece has a crimp, or waviness, similar to sheep's wool, but there is no lanolin, or greasiness as found in sheep's wool. The Hunter Hill Alpacas are huacaya. There are twenty-two natural colors of alpaca fleece. These colors can be blended into more colors, and alpaca fleece can also be dyed to practically any color. The fleece can also be blended with other fibers, such as wool or silk. Alpacas are shorn for their fleece each year, which will produce 5 to 10 pounds of soft, warm fiber per animal. In colder climates some breeders may shear their alpacas every two years to produce a longer fiber, but one year is normal. Hand spinners and the commercial fiber industry eagerly seek the fleece. Alpacas chew their cud similar to a cow, although they have three stomachs rather than four stomachs like a cow. Alpacas graze, eating grasses and hay. They are usually also fed a special mineral supplement in grain, especially for pregnant females over the winter period when snow and lack of vegetation prevents grazing. Alpacas do not have hooves, but soft padded feet with two toes and toenails, which have to be trimmed since they are not worn down by the rugged, rocky mountains. They have no top teeth in the front; when they chew they grind their food sideways, like a camel. The average height of an alpaca is 36" at the withers, and they weigh up to about 150 to 180 lbs. Males of breeding age (about three years old) are kept in adjacent, but separate pastures from the females. Breeding is selective, chosen based on bloodlines. A female may be shipped across the country for breeding with the selected male. When so shipped, she will be accompanied by at least one other alpaca since they do not live well alone. Alpacas are herd animals and do not like to be alone. There must always be at least two, or stress may set in, the animal will not eat, and could die. Alpacas have only one baby, called a cria, at a time - twins are extremely rare. Pregnancy lasts for about 11-1/2 months, and they breed at any time of the year. When giving birth, alpacas do not usually require any assistance, and have their young while standing. Another interesting fact is that alpacas give birth normally between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. A cria usually weighs approximately 15 to 20 pounds, and begins nursing within 30 minutes of birth. They are weaned at about six months. The mother is usually mated again in about two weeks.
Alpacas are disease resistant and low maintenance. They are friendly and not at all dangerous; they do not bite, but may kick with their hind legs if surprised or frightened from behind, (but their feet are soft) and sometimes they may spit. Alpacas have a life span of 15 to 20 years, although that is based on life expectancy from South America - they have not lived here long enough to know what effect new living conditions, food and climate will have.

I strongly believe that alpacas are underrated. When I grow up I am changing my name to Al and starting my very own alpaca farm. I will make my house out of bones from my alpacas that have passed away. I will weave my clothing out of alpaca wool. I will sleep, eat, and play with my alpacas. I LOVE alpacas.

"Owie," Norah gasped as I kicked her in the toes. "You've hurt me so much these days." Does that sentence have a hidden meaning? I wondered.
"Norah, is there something you want to tell me?" I asked, wrapping my arm around her warm shoulders.
"Uh..no." She said, poking herself in the eye. "See I do this sometimes because my eyeballs squeak." as if that was a good explanation for her strange behavior. I arched an eyebrow.
"How do you do that?" She asked, proceeding to move her eyes and jaw around spasmatically. I pondered momentarily if it would be wise of me to go fetch a tranquilizer from the clinic for her. I turned the music up, and looked over at Norah. She was now licking her teeth, her mouth gaping open like a black abyss. She pointed out that it was amost 11:11, then proceeded to try and show me two students who she is sure have a 'Thing'.
I hummed along with the song as Norah squirmed next to me.
"Are you sure you're okay?" I asked.
"I think I should be one of those people that they like strap to a wheelchair so that I can't move, except then I wouldn't know what to do with my hands so I'd like eat my arm or something.." I tuned out as she continued to describe how she would throw her mom in the water and then move on with me. I danced a bit in my seat to the music and ignored her questions on how hearing aids worked.
"Were you really listening to that story?" She asked.
"Nope. " I said, still dancing and typing vigorously. Norah busied herself by flipping through a journal she had found on the desk. She eventually put the journal down and tapped the desk. Then a miracle happened: Norah was still. The moment was fleeting, though, and she soon picked the journal up again, and looked at me. Her wide brown eyes gleamed with mischief.
What is she up to now? I wondered.
"I want to lick this journal." She proclaimed.
"I'm pretty sure thats not a good idea." I said. I went back to what I was doing on the computer. Suddenly I felt Norah twitching and writhing in her chair. She reached across my body, pointing at the clock. I glanced over at the glowing red numbers, which had arranged themselves to say 11:11. I wished, as I always did at this time. As the clock flipped over to 11:12, Norah launched into a monolouge about the two students that she had said had a 'thing'.
"He's going to beat her." She exclainmed. "See, she cant defend herself."
"I see." I said. Suddenly Mr. Snelling was standing in front of the computer
"What are you writing about?" he demanded. Norah and I began cowering in fear.
"Norah." I squeaked.
"Are you writing about how great she is?" he asked, glaring down on me.
"Actually I'm writing about what spaz she is." I said.
"Oh." Snelling said. He bent over and began scrutinizing my article, pointing out every run-on sentence and incorrect punctionation point.
"I'm writing this all as it happens, so its difficult to keep up." I justified.
"Shut it. Count to twenty to yourself." Snelling snapped. I began counting, and Norah crossed her legs on her chair and began to meditate.
Snelling muttered some uncomrehendable words and walked away. Suddenly I had a splittng headache. I looked at the clock. 11:25. Five more minutes of this. If there is one thing I have learned in my friendship with Norah, it is that she handles herself a lot better when not confined to a desk. She then stood up, patting my head.
"I'm going to get some paper from the printer." she said.
"Okay." I said.
"I'll see you in an hour." she exclaimed. She came back in about thirty seconds later, sighing.
"I couldn't find any paper." She said. She began describing her pe class. I soon noticced that everyone was leaving the room.
"We have one minute." Norah pointed out. I nodded. By now she was talking about a teen pregnancy documentary she had seen last night. I glanced desperatley at the clock. Suddenly it changed to 11:30, tiggering the ringing of the bell. Never before had I been so happy to hear that bell. I saved what I had been working on and got up, happily leaving another day in publications.

Homelessness Awarness Project.

Students at a Canadian university recently finished an interesting project: spending five days of their lives as a homeless person. Students slept outside on the streets from Sunday Mar. 15 to Friday Mar. 20. They had to give up their usual lifestyle, such as cell phones, income and showers and only eat and drink what was donated to them. During the day and night they begged for change. Participants roughed it during night two and three by sleeping outside in -35C weather with wind chill. Students were also expected to still go to class and withstand the stares and looks from their classmates.

“You never really realize how heartless people are to the homeless. We have some people who avoided eye contact with us or avoided us altogether,” said Krissi Bucholtz, a student who participated in the project.

Blogs were set up so that participants could tell what each day felt like. Most became emotional as their nutrition level dropped, their hair became matted and their body sore from sleeping on the concrete ground.

Jaclyn Bell wrote that the experience caused her to re-think her situation: “I am so lucky to be able to flick a switch when I need light, or adjust the thermostat when I’m hot or cold, or turn the water on when I need to shower, or turn the TV on if I’m bored. All these things I had absolutely no choice in doing today. The lights (sun) went out and I was stuck, left there in the dark with nothing to do about it.”

“Obviously it is nothing like actually living out on the streets but it’s kind of like doing it with training wheels on. Getting somewhat of an idea what some people have to go through.” said Connor Welsh.

The students gave tips to others who are considering trying this project:
-Do not sleep with other homeless people unless you are in a shelter. It's nice to have faith in your fellow humans, but a desperate homeless person can be very dangerous.

-Find a safe spot to sleep at night.

-If it is experimental, do it in the summer or in a warm climate.

-Become friends with other homeless folks around you and they will watch your back. If you have to, make-up a story so they will not be feel ashamed (don't tell them you are living on the street for the experience).

-Join a YMCA. They have great (and usually free) shower facilities.

Bumbershoot is an annual music/art festival held here in Seattle. One of America's largest music festivals, it takes place Labor Day weekend at the Seattle Center, which was built for the Worlds Fair. The Seattle Center includes indoor theaters, outdoor stages, McCaw Hall, and Memorial Stadium. Musicians perform in all of these places, and there is also a stage set up in Key Arena and several of the Seattle Center lawns.

Some of the big names last year were: Beck, Paramore, The Offspring, T.I., Flobots, Death Cab For Cutie, Stone Temple Pilots, Estelle, Bedouin Soundclash and more.

My experience at Bumbershoot last year was a good one. There were a lot of good performers, delicious food, and things to see. I met a lot of interesting people, and found a lot of new bands I liked. There was a downside though, as I spent a lot of time just laying around between sets, and it was extremely hot. I lost a shoe crowdsurfing, and there was a huge group of people who suddenly collapsed all over each other during Paramore's set, holding me and a friend down. By the time I left at around 11:00 PM I was exhausted but happy.

Everybody knows what a clique is. A group of people who hang out with each other, and are categorized by how they dress, act, socialize or treat other people. Every school has cliques. These days we have more labels than a clothing store. Some of the ones most commonly thrown around include, Preps, Emo kids, Nerds, Jocks, Losers, and Druggie, or 'bad' kids. LMS has a distinct social hierarchy, that can be seen by anyone of any age. Everybody knows which group they're 'in', and most people can tell you which group anyone of their peers belongs too. Most kids don't have a problem with cliques, and enjoy the sense of belonging somewhere. Adults tend to disagree, and think that everyone should just get along with everyone. This leads to teachers trying to group kids with others that they probably don't get along with for projects etc.

WASL TESTING

The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)is a standardized assessment of learning that is used in the state of Washington. The WASL assessment consists of tests on four subjects (reading, mathematics, science, and writing) with four different types of questions (multiple-choice, short-answer, essay, and problem solving). It is given to students from third to tenth grade, though it is not required in the ninth grade. Third & sixth graders are tested in reading and math; fourth and seventh graders in math, reading and writing. Fifth and eighth graders are tested in reading, math and science. The high school assessment, given during a student's tenth grade year, contains all four subjects. The first WASL was given in 1996. High school students are allowed to retake the WASL during a summer retest session in August. You are allowed five attempts at the WASL.

In 2006 there was such a high failure rate that it sparked controversy about the test. For instance, only 32% of 6th graders met the 'standard' for math. One angry mother said:
"The WASL is a wasteful, invalid, unproven, abusive experiment. My child is not your data or the state's guinea pig. There is no law stating that s/he must take the test. There is no program that recognizes WASL scores for admittance or placement, and if this school is utilizing them in this manner, perhaps a lawsuit will take care of that. I do not trust the questions; I do not trust the scoring; and until the state decides that it is my right to view my child's scored test and all scoring guides, with an advocate present, I will not allow my child to take part in this assessment."

But also a 8th grade student said:
"I really dont mind the WASL. It is not too hard for me, and does not seem to affect anything. I take the test and then go on with my life. I think it offers an expirience that we dont get with normal school. Its not like I enjoy it, but I dont see what the fuss is about"

They are getting rid of the WASL after this year.

Cause In Life There's Only One Winter-- You Better Aim Strait So You Can Hit The Sinner

Many people love music, some even say that without its existence life would be boring. Music is so inspirational, I could not imagine life without music.

Although I do not play any instrument [ I was quite good at the trumpet in 5th grade] I love music all the same, I never go anywhere without my trusty iPod. It is full of some of the most random but wonderful songs that I know of. One of my most interesting friends also enjoys music to the full extent and he is a walking musical. You mention blue eyes and he bursts out a faithful cover of The Who's, Behind Blue Eyes, complete with guitar solo's and the exact beat of every second of the song. You see, he is a percussionist. Although some find it annoying, I find it enjoyable. We have much of the same music tastes although I tend to lean more towards the Indie scene which he says he hates.

--On a different note, our LMS band has been doing quite well. We have a 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade and 8th grade band. As well as a Jazz band. Our band numbers have been decreasing by the year. I remember in 5th grade band there was 50 clarinets alone, but as you go higher in the grades it seems that there are less people willing to showcase their musical talents. But all in all, our band program is doing quite well.--

Australia, The Movie.

Australia

Australia is a film that takes place in, well, Australia. The movie is filled with action, love and even some explosives. The setting is a small ranch in the outback that is also inhabited by the local Aboriginals. Lady Sarah Ashley [played by Nicole Kidman] comes to her husband's ranch to over look the droving business. She soon realizes that her husbands business is "going under" and she tries to save it--with the help of The Drover [played by Hugh Jackman] and Nullah[played by Brandon Walters], who is a young Aboriginal boy that she takes in as her own. The story takes heartwrenching turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat, erupting with suspense.

I personally liked this movie, wouldn't say I loved it but I found it satisfactory. Some parts made me scream "NO!", like when we all thought Nullah died. But yet other parts I found were unrealistic, for example, when one man got trampled it was hard to believe the affects, they looked a little fake. I almost started crying in one part and felt for what some of the characters had to go through. I was a sad story, but I left feeling content. Even though the man behind me might have thought I found it humorous because of my uncontrollable laughter, I found it quite a serious story, with a good plot, personable characters and a some-what happy ending.

New Quarter

So as of today, February 2nd, it is the beginning of a new quarter. My mother keeps on asking what my new classes are, but reality is that most kids only change their electives. I am the only blogger who decided to stay in the Publications class, most of my friends said that they wanted to try out different things, they wanted to "explore" their options.That is totally understandable but I wanted to stay in and carry out the blog... at least that's what I keep telling myself, but it may be that nothing else interested me.

So. Here I am writing the LMS Blog. All by myself.

Adventure Education Memories.

Two guys named J.P. and Christian showed the Adventure Ed. class and a few of the LMS Bloggers about 400 pictures of the 2300 they took on their trip to California.

Adventurous Educationous Memories
In a classroom filled with Adventure Ed. kids, 4 of the LMS Bloggers stood out. We had just been introduced to two young guys, but I had already forgotten their names. The lights went off, music started, and about 400 photos of a trip to California flashed by our eyes. The two men we Mr.Snelling introduced us to commented slightly on each. Memories of an Adventure Education expedition circulated throughout the room.

Laughter at some pictures, ooooing and ahhhing at some of the most beautiful pictures, and silence at others. There were also pictures where about three Adventure Ed-ers said "Remember That!" or, "Look! That's me!" Whether it was the drunk people on the train, or Mr. Bergquist sleeping everywhere, it seems to me like they had the trip of a million experiences, and hopefully the second semester Adventure Ed. kids will have just as great as a time as these kids did.

As we sat in Mr. Bergquist's dark classroom we looked at some pretty "enlightening". Everyone cracked up when they saw Korey's face about five inches from the camera, some people were slightly disturbed. They took a few buses around California and after awhile I think the regular riders started to stop taking the bus. At one time the bus was so full that Korey ended up buried under all the backpacks and all you could see was his head. It didn't look very comfortable, but he made it back in one piece. On one bus Mr. Bergquist was talking to a friendly old man but when someone took a picture of him it looked like he was afraid for his life. There were a lot of pictures of kids trying to walk the slack line ( a rope tied in between two trees that you walk across) and falling off. There is also a latest news lash on Adventure Ed., instead of having a full semester of Adventure Ed. it will only be a quarter long so more kids can take the class.

As I walk into Mr. Bergquist's to talk to Mr. Snelling, I, along with a few other bloggers, are called over to were two men with laptops were chatting happily. Their names were stated but I soon forgot. Note from Snelling: They are Jon Paul Dowdell and Christian Gaggia. Their purpose was documentation of the trip, and we were to watch their slide show. Along with Mr. B, Snelling and the whole Adventure Ed class we watched a slide show that was filled with 400 amazing photos of people, places and things. Both of the guys had taken photos and together there were about 2,000 photos.

Some of my favorite photos had subjects such as a Jesus action figure, a juggling kid and the students who went on the trip. We all sat and laughed at the memories that the photos brought back. Even though I didn't go on the trip I still enjoyed it and found them fun to look at. And now as the quarter is coming to an end I am looking forward to seeing what the next Adventure Ed trips photos turn out to be.

Swimming with Dolphins

Yay! swimming with dolphins is awesome: it's many peoples' dream! But you still have to think about the dolphins, I mean do you really think that every morning the dolphins are going "Yay, we get to swim with people tomorrow." I kind of doubt it. They always look like they're happy and having tons of fun, but their faces just naturally go into the shape of a smile :) . When you swim out into the middle of the pool, and they come out and pull you back to the group of people you are with. That's really fun for me and my family, and they get pretty good exercise pulling a bunch of people back and forth, back and forth, a million times (that could get boring). The one thing that they may think is fun is at the end of the time you have spent with them they do a sequence of jumps and flips all together.

One of the sad things about seeing the dolphins is that after a long time being in captivity their top dorsel fin starts to droop down. Only one of the dolphin fins was noticeably starting to droop, but it's still sad.

Inaugurational Writing

January 20th, noon o'clock eastern time thousands upon thousands of people flocked to D.C. to see the president sworn in. People read poetry in monotone, others sang songs about how great our country is and how free we are, and others led the people in prayer. It was so silent that you could actually hear the camera man mumbling to him self...

It was a day-no, more like a weekend- filled with inaugurationalness. Many schools are watching the inauguration on T.V. with their classes. Others are participating in assemblies, some are even hosting an inaugural ball. A few school have a group of students and teachers who had been fundraising the whole school year to send them to the inauguration.

If you watched the inauguration and saw Obama being sworn in you might have noticed that Obama messed up on his vows, but the real thing is that Chief Justice John Roberts messed up. He said the words wrong and Obama noticed, he than paused so Roberts could say the vows in the right way. So for those who said " See! Obama can't be president! He can't even recite a sentence!!!" you are wrong.

Crazy Weather

Have you noticed a change in our weather? If not, you might want to open your eyes. First a thick blanket of snow (14 inches in places) covered our lawns, with a record for the lowest temperature in about 15 years. Now that the snow has melted and the weather has warmed up there has been major flooding in many places. We are one of the only 2 counties that are not being flooded. The flooding has gotten bad enough that there is danger that the adventure ed people might not be able to go on there trip! I'm no environmentalist, but this is where the Global Climate change v.s. global warming comes in.
If it was Global warming that was happening to our planet, then why are the warmer places getting record lows, and colder places getting warmer then usual weather (not enough for record highs)? But if you look at from the perspective of Global climate change, it makes a little more sense. Because no all of our planet is warming up, but most - if not all - our planet is changing.
So stay dry and safe in this crazy weather! Who knows what it will do next!

To Wear or Not to Wear

Almost all the magazines recommended for teens have at least one article on what kind of clothing you should and should not wear. But they never really ask the opinion of the people who are actually going to be wearing the clothes. So I'm going to compare different things about Hollister and Aeropostale, like prices and clothing quality, but I'm going to try not to make it like a boring news letter. The first thing that isn't the best about Aeropostales clothing is that just about every shirt or sweat shirt you can find there either says, Aero, or Aeropostale 1987. So at least you can never forget where you bought your shirt! Hollisters shirts don't have Hollister written all over them, but they usually have something about California. Most of the time their shirts are the same style with a different pattern on them or they are the same pattern just on different styles of shirts. The jeans at Hollister and Aeropostale are just regular everyday jeans but some have holes some don't, it just depends on the style.
I personally am not a big fan of Hollister. I've never ever bought anything from Hollister and I think their perfume stinks! (Abercrombie and Fitch smells worse though). Aeropostale has a "signature" perfume but they don't spray it throughout the store. Not to say that walking around smelling like a clothes store is bad or anthing, it's your choice, but i wouldn't.

Now I'm going to switch gears and talk about prices. At Aeropostale if you want a T-shirt then the usual price is going to be $15.50, their tank tops are $7.99, and their sweaters can get up to $44.00 . Hollisters shirts are around $24.00. Their sweaters can get up to $60.00! Right now most of the stores are going through sales so the prices are generally good, but money doesn't grow on trees so good luck getting a $60.00 sweater.

Bunny Update!

To the LMS Bloggers despair, Willis, the peach-colored rabbit, was killed by a car a few weeks back. You may have noticed that the LMS rabbits haven't been around campus lately. To the average student, they might think that rabbits hibernate. Actually, rabbits do not hibernate at all, they are just not as active as in the spring and summer. You also may not know that rabbits molt their hare in the summer, then grow new, white-ish fur to camouflage themselves from anything that might want to hurt them. With this new white fur they can blend into the snow. Ok, so those last couple sentences were pretty boring, but hey, I had to have something factual in there. Um, with Willis dead there isn't much to right about the LMS bunnies. So there might not be another bunny report....:'(

walking alongside donkeys- my story of Santorini

Why did we choose to not experience the thrill of galloping [or whatever the term for a donkey moving is] up the mountain? Because these poor animals were dying, if I may be so blunt.

Every day donkeys "drag" tourists up the steep cliff side on the island of Santorini in Greece. Although Santorini is quite beautiful, the sound of wheezing donkeys does not bring pleasure to my ears. I over heard a quite young woman stating that the donkeys get no rest and are being treated " inhumane". I have no idea how this woman got the facts but they did seem to be true. I would not enjoy carrying sweaty tourists up a cliff in 90 degrees, would you?

At the seaport of Fria you have the choice of A. going up hill on donkeys, B. getting a lift on the sky tram or C. hiking the
1,000 feet to the top.
We, being lazy over-heated Americans took the sky tram. And it was amazing, it had great views and good photography opportunities. Once at the top we experienced great shopping , iced chocolates,
which were quite addicting, and beautiful views of
the ocean and the surrounding islands.

And guess what, we took the tram down too.

Movie Reviews

As we start the new year in hope of better things we are happy to be able to entertain ourselves with new movies. Some are old stories retold in a new light and some of the stories have been thought up new by some of the best writers out there. These movies are action packed, heartbreaking, tear-jerking and some are hilarious. Here are my reviews, along with reviews from other magazines and websites. I hope that these reviews help you decide what your next movie to watch will be.

The Dark Knight
From the crazy makeup that makes the Joker the Joker, to the Bat Suit, this movie was all around fantastic. This movie is loaded with everything you could ever want in a action flick. Car chases, bank robberies and a man in a cape. What more could the Batman legacy become?

I myself am not a superhero fan, never have been, never will be. But I will make one exception, this movie. Heath Ledger played one of the most devious roles as the Joker. We are all shaken by the fact that his last role was this movie, but I say that this was a great film and will it always keep his memory with us. Christian Bale did a brilliant job, taking on the part of Batman himself.

As The Rolling Stone puts it " The Dark Knight earns the number one spot by raising the bar." Couldn't have said it better my self.

Bolt
Bolt is a movie where at first I was thinking, oh great, another animated little kid movie. But I found myself laughing many times. Yes it is an animated movie but that doesn't automatically make it a children's movie, does it? I think not. Bolt would be a great little kid movie but also a family movie. Its a cute story with a predictable happy ending but that's what makes Disney movies so popular. The New York Times says, " Bolt, in other words, is a real movie." If I were you I would see Bolt. Even if you don't think you will like it, just go and watch it, you'll find your self laughing at a silly hamster or something like that.

If you don't know what Bolt is about then you obviously haven't been paying attention to those thousands of trailers on T.V. In one sentence there is a dog who is an "actor" on a show where he has superpowers, but he doesn't know that this television show isn't his real life. Problems occur and they are eventually solved. I don't want to give the ending away for those who haven't seen it. And, for those of you who have already seen it, get ready for the 3-D version! [ no joke.]

Nicaragua! Continued.

Like I said before, this past summer, I went to Nicaragua! It was so amazing. I went volcano climbing 3 times, went to a handicapped orphanage, camped out in the mountains of the rain forest, and worked in a village called Villa Catalina (doing things like building and playing with children). I went down there with my uncle's non profit organization called "Amigos For Christ".

His organization started just after Hurricane Mitch struck Nicaragua, leaving hundreds, if not thousands, of families homeless, jobless, and many dead. My uncle just felt a calling to go down there and bring as many people as possible, back to a home, with food and a place to sleep at night.

After my uncle and a team of workers began building, the first village -of three- began forming. This was Villa Santa Matilda. Two more came after, (name unknown) and Villa Santa Catalina.

He has put more than 300 families back into a home, with a job, and food on their plates. Tons of people fly in every year to help build (mostly people from the US) . If you would like to learn more, this is my uncle's website: http://www.amigosforchrist.org/

Two Different Views Of The Same Day

Looking Out The Library Window

As i sit on the couch,over looking the courtyard I notice a pair of girls slowly walking towards the locker room. They are talking in hushed voices, maybe talking about someone that is on her mind. As the girls disappear into the building a teacher jogs out of the locker room. She is carrying a half eaten apple, maybe its a quick lunch as she rushed towards her next class.

The longer the lunch drags on the more interesting the events become. A group of four girls stand in a circle, preparing to play a make shift game of catch. their baseball is a large orange, and they seem to be having a lot of fun. For now. As the throw the orange back and forth it is getting constantly dropped, causing it to be bruised. The longer its thrown the more ripped up it becomes. Soon girls are screaming as the orange juice flies in their hands and faces. They soon abandon the orange and leave it on the ground. The fruit that used to bring them such pleasure is now cast aside.

An Hour Looking Through The Window

Pick-up vans, minivans.

drenched ground,
Water sprays up from passing-

VW Bugs, soda pop vans.

Now the runner has caught up to the dog walker,
And the teacher is coming back from work,
The bus stop is now inhabited.

2 bikers, sleek BMW.

Police patrol by,
And trash blows dow the street,
As Christmas trees are strapped to the top of cars,
The transit pulls up with a Santa clad driver.

This past summer, i went to the exotic country of Nicaragua. It was an amazig experience filled with an insanely beautiful culture. I did everything from climbing a volcano, to visiting a handicapped orphanage. I will put on another post in a little bit with tons more details about my awesome trip. To be continued... -Lennox

Treats for Troops

Think about this, your thousands of miles away from home the bunker gear your wearing makes the heat even more unbearable. You wish you could talk to your family for awhile but you can't. Imagine what you would really want if you had days like that on a day to day basis. The school is going to have a few boxes up in the office to put supplies in that we can send to the troops. One of the main things we would like to send them is chap stick, there is a paper being handed out to all the fourth period teachers with a list of all the items that would be helpful to the troops. Mr. Sage has already added an item to the box. He put in a pen that one of his shop students made in his class. The boxes will be in the office for ten days at the least.

The Ever Growing Population of LMS...

Think of having one parent, with 31 kids. Well, that's what it's like for Mr. Ratekin and Mr. Bergquist. Every day, in 5th period they are in command of 31 CRAZY 8th graders... all by themselves! It's hard for them, you can imagine. They are staying strong but still it's hard not to complain.

Around 12:05 (when lunch ends), over 30 students file into the Social Studies and English block classes. With every single seat filled, the ruckus begins. First, the teacher must calm the kids down, because it's SSR, where every student in the school reads for about 20 minutes. Then, the teacher has to start class, which is probably the hardest task of all! As many of you may know, kids have a hard time being quiet for long, and 20 minutes...IS LONG! That brings on a whole new round of challenges for the teacher!

A couple of the LMS Bloggers had a nice interview with the superintendent Mr. McCarthy. Here is one of the ideas he has for the large class sizes: "Most classes are supposed to have about 25 children in them. If a class, because of its nature, has only 8 or 9 kids in it, then you have to balance it out by adding more kids to other classes." So maybe that's why the class sizes are humongous!

But, you know, to me that just sounds like some excuses. My theory is that since the school doesn't have enough money to pay a lot of teachers, they had to cut some. Then they had to keep adding kids to different classes. It also doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Personally, I don't know any classes that have 8 or 9 kids in them.

The Publications Class

This years publications class is split up into four different groups. Those groups are of course blog and yearbook, but the ones you might not hear about much are video yearbook. They make sure that they get a picture or video footage of every student around LMS. The other group there is, is video productions. They are the ones who make the Friday Show every week. The blog group obviously writes the blog since your reading it right now. The yearbook group is the main group of the publications class.They are the ones who make the awesome yearbook everyone buys at the end of the year. Each person gets to create one or two pages for the yearbook. This is the first year we have done a school blog here at LMS. That is a little bit about this years publications class. Who's TOTALLY EXCITED for the upcoming Winter Break?! I know I am, and so are the rest of the Bloggers. Most everyone knows what happens during these glorious 2 weeks. Christmas! And for those of you who don't celebrate Christmas, there are plenty of other really neat holidays celebrated during this time. For example, Kwanzaa. But lets not forget New Year's. This is a great holiday for everyone to celebrate. It brings in the beginning of 2009, and for many people, New Year's Resolutions, along with a fresh start. Here At LMS, The New Year just means less time until the end of the year!

Did you know that we have no school at all next week! Well of course you did! Because on Thursday of next week - the 27th to be exact - is Thanksgiving! We usually only get that Thursday and Friday off, but there are school wide conferences going on from the 24-26, so we get that part of the week off as well. That means that when we get back from this break, we only have 15 more days until Christmas break! Christmas break is two week's long though, because it's also for New Year's! So we only have little time left in 2008; and then we're on to our new year!
And remember to dress up in blue and white on Friday, because leader ship is trying to get every on to dress up every last Friday of every month, and sens we're not going to be here, this Friday is our blue and white Friday!

Random Stuff Happening Around LMS

It's a new quarter! Most of us will be switching electives except publications students. We will all be sitting in the same classes this quarter. This new quarter brings on new subjects and new projects. It all can get pretty stressful but at least you can look forward to the due date because after that you don't have to worry about it anymore. Leadership is also trying to get us all to dress up in blue and white the last Friday of every month. So make sure you get your blue and white ready and show some school spirit!

The girls soccer team also has their first soccer game this Thursday against Kings in Kings.Go Lady Cougs! Next week we don't have school all week because of conferences and Thanksgiving. Thats a whole nine days!

2008 Veterans Day

To kids like you and me Veterans Day is just a day where we get a day off of school, but to many others, like Mrs. Kizer, its so much more. Veterans Day is a day where we honor the people who have severed our country. We recently had an assembly to honor the people who did this.There is a memorial on the LMS grounds that states the names of several men who had gone to LMS back when it was a high school. When these men left it was a big loss to the community. There was only 85 students at this time so even five would be a big loss for the school. Mrs. Kizer explained that she wants to make sure our veterans are remembered because she thinks that the people who risked their lives to make sure that we have freedom is something that should be honored and remembered. Mr. Zisette's new turtle!!

Have you noticed any thing new in Mr. Zisette's class room? Well if not, there is a new student in LMS; it's a turtle!!!(who had an egg! But it died) Don't worry, he's not going to use it for any science experiments! He just simply got it because he wanted a turtle. He still hasn't decided on a name for her; he is taking suggestions from students, and once he has a good amount of names to choose from he'll decide from there. So if you know of a name that you think will fit her like a glove, then go to Mr. Zisette and tell him your awesome idea!!!!! So don't just sit there letting this turtle go unnamed!!! Go to Mr. Zisette - If he's not busy that is - and tell him your cool name! But if your home reading this you can wait until school.

The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker is a show that happens every year around Christmas time. It is a ballet that Whidbey Island Dance Theater (WIDT) does every year.This year is the 16th season of the Nutcracker. There are a few LMS students that are in the Nutcracker. All of them have been in it for a few years. They hired people from a different company to come and be their forest king, queen, and the actual nutcracker. The rehearsals have already begun over the weekends. The first performance is December 5th, we hope you think your cool enough to come!

Our LMS library has just bought a bunch of new books to add to our collection. One of the most popular series we have is Twilight. There is already a new movie coming out for the first book , it comes out on November 21. You should check out this series it is like a mystery/ action/ romance all smooshed together. It leaves you wondering whats going to happen next every page you read. I've heard about more girls reading it than guys but I really think that this book is good for both guys and girls. The Bunnies of LMS

An infestation of bunny rabbits has taken over the LMS campus. These bunnies vary from light brown to black. The beginning of this bunny rampage began with the release of a few bunnies, then, the bunny population EXPLODED!!!! There are now rabbits scurrying around everywhere!! There have been many discussions about these rabbits and Mr.Snelling, Mr. Bergquist and Mr. Terhar had a "conference" about what we should do with them. A few ideas shot around, some interesting ones included the Adventure Ed. class barbecuing them and then serving them at lunch to cut down on lunch costs. hmmmmmmm. poor bunnies....

No one knows if the bunny population is ever going to decrease. Every year more bunnies are left on the fairgrounds, if they weren't sold at the annual Island County Fair. These bunnies breed like crazy. Our school's lawn mower, Mr. Poolman, has a problem with the rabbits digging their burrows around the school. The bunnies don't seem to care though!

On a recent poll by The LMS Bloggers, Willis was the favorite name for the orange rabbit livin' on campus. Mr. Snelling had the idea to spray a different color of paint on each rabbit to tell one from another. However, a quick google expedition told us that poor Willis would die...

6th Grade Drama!!

"O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I'll no longer be a Capulet." Is one of the most famous lines from a classic play, Romeo and Juliet. It's also what a lot of people think of when you say drama (no, not bad drama, but plays.) Well, back to the topic. Currently in drama they aren't working on Romeo and Juliet, but they did just put on a play. The 6th Graders did a terrific job putting on plays of classic fairy tales like, Rumpelstiltskin, The Frog Prince, and Little Red Riding Hood. The play went on during fifth period, it was a fantastic turn out too! Parents and students almost completely filled the auditorium. All of the 6th graders were very well practiced, and very excited for the play. It was amazing!!!!!

Soccer!

Soccer is starting! About fifty girls are trying out for the teams: C team, Jr. Varsity, and Varsity. We tried to get some guys out there on the field but they weren't allowed. The coaches this year are coach Shanholtzer (varsity) coach Miller (jr. varsity) and coach Christina (C team). They're supposed to find out what team their on Thursday or Friday. Hopefully no one will get cut from the team, but there are only so many seats on the bus.

There will be ten games, five home and five away. We play Kings twice, Lakewood three times, Sultan three times, and granite twice. Practice started on November 3rd. Good luck lady cougs!!!

"Yes We Can"

Yesterday, November 4th, history was made. Millions came, some waited in 5 hour lines just to cast one vote, just so their voice could be heard. Thousands of people showed up at both candidates headquarters to hear their party leader speak. And one man stood triumphant. Barack Obama is our new President Elect for the United States of America. He is the first ever Africa-American President to be elected. In January Obama will take over the Presidents spot and lead our country.

For those of you who stayed up late, as I did, listened to both John McCain and Barack Obama give their speeches. John McCain gave a very wonderful speech saying that we are all Americans no matter what party, he also said that everyone who followed him in this campaign should now stand up and support Barack Obama as he heads into the White House.

Obama's speech was moving. He once again showed us why he was elected president. His speech reflected on hope, and how we are one nation. He pointed out that tonight was a historical night for America and he is proud to be serving as our head of government. He summed up his speech with something that we all can believe in, "Yes We Can". Here in America we can do anything that we put our minds to and now that we have an African-American in the Oval Office it really does prove the point that anything is possible in America.

Adventure Ed.

Guess what!!! Adventure Ed. has returned and their all in one piece! It's a miracle! There have been reported sighting from some of the students that there were as Kareena says " Scary bears!" and some fighting raccoons right outside Chase's and Sean's tent. Some of the raccoons acctually tried to take Chase's backpack and took his camera. At one point they all had to wade up to their thighs in water because the tide was so high. They did not enjoy that part of the trip because the water was freezing.

We all think Mr. S is relieved to be back from the rainy wilderness, his exact words when we asked him were " Well, ya it's not raining in here." When we told him about the bears and raccoons the other group saw he said " Ya we were going the opposite way so we saw them first, but for a shorter period of time."

Now we're all happy they have returned from the coast, but I'm sure they're all ready to set off on their next adventure. Until then though their stuck here.

The 2008 Election

Today is November 3rd and we are one day away from the 2008 Presidential Election. Even if you think we are just kids, and that because we cant vote that we don't care or think about the election. But the truth is that we do care, and we do think about it. Many kids talk about who their families and themselves support. We talk about the election all through the school year last year and followed both parties as they started the primaries and began the process of choosing who their party nominee was going to be.

Fashion Around LMS!!

Whats your style??? It doesn't matter if you like to mix and match or just like to keep it clean cut and simple. Our school has many different varieties. One of the fashion types we have come across has been inspired by Mr. Zisette and taken on by Kyle. After Mr. Zisette complimented him Kyles exact words were " Thank you, oh oh no, dang it!" (Kyle hadn't realized that they had the same jacket) Yet Kyle still wears the jacket even though Mr. Zisette makes it a point everyday to remind him of their matching fashion sense.

We've noticed that most of the girls here at LMS like to mix and match. Girls like Lennox and Alina fall into this category of vibrant colors and stand out patterns. Their style has also been spreading around the school.

As for the guys they've mainly kept it simple. Sports brands play a big part in their wardrobe. As far as we can tell many guys are Husky fans, but there still are a few others in there (like cougars!!). Most of us can't understand why most of them wear shorts because its so cold around here. So now you have your inside look at the fashions of LMS!

Leadership

The leadership class is an Elective that 7th and 8th graders can take. This class deals with everything from dances, to school spirit to promoting a drug-free school. Their most recent projects were a big chain that had every kids name in the school on it. The idea of this chain or banner is that whenever someone does drugs the banner breaks. We currently had a little problem. The banner just suddenly fell down and it had to be repaired. They also had a problem when they were trying to move it so they wrapped it around Jake Sladky and carried it away. After it was re-fixed they hung it in the lunch room. Their other project was hanging posters [like the one in the picture ] all around the school. The leadership class also helps put on dances. They do every thing from decorating to fundraising every school dance. The leadership class is a great elective and you should take it if you love to set a good example and help our school.

Okay, so this is my third post about football, but what can I say? We are amazing!! We are currently the 43rd best middle school in the NATION when it comes to division 2A football. Nick French won the Cascade MVP for 7th grade, and Patrick Monel won the MVP for the 8th graders. JV and V won the division championships! GO COUGS!! We are all so proud of you guys and girl! You guys had an amazing season and we hope that the 7th graders will go undefeated next year and make it three years in a row!

At our lovely LMS, we have 11 total electives.

Leadership- Organizing school activities, like dances, fundraisers, and field trips.

Adventure ED- Going on AMAZING trips and adventures through out the US.

Publications- Most importantly, making our school yearbook! But also, Videos and Blog.
Creative Cooking- Well, what do you think? You cook creatively!
Shop- Building fun things like chairs, and other various furniture.
Art- Painting, Drawing, Sculpting.
Band- These kids are the future Beatles!
Drama- Acting, improvisation, and entertaining.
Apprenticeship- Learn the tricks of having a real job, and making money!
Team Sports- Like PE, only more fun!
Boxing- YOU BOX!

Congrats Football!

UPDATE: Coupeville's varsity team didn't have enough players, there is NO varsity game.

We need to cheer on our LMS Cougar football players as they head into their last game on Wednesday. The Varsity team has gone undefeated this year [ WOOT WOOT!!!] and if we win this game we are the league champs!!

We are all excited about this upcoming game for both teams. Now don't think our last game is gonna go perfectly, we may have some problems. The latest news is that Coupeville, the scheduled team we are to play, doesn't want to play us and might forfeit [ I wonder why..... :-D ] so Kings would like to play us. We would most definitely like to play Kings, they would be a challenge, they are considered the toughest team out there[ besides us of course! ]. We interviewed Taylor Simmons, who was the leading wide receiver for the 8th grade team. He broke his finger two games ago and was out for the rest of the season. Taylor Morley interviewed him the day before their last game.

Morley- Would you rather play Coupeville or Kings in the next game?
Simmons- If I could play I would rather play Kings.

Morley-How has the team improved since last year?
Simmons- Camden, our quarterback, has got a lot better at throwing, Aaron and Patrick can run the ball a lot better, and our lineman have gotten a lot better at blocking.

Morley- How do you feel about the season closing?
Simmons- Its just school sports so its not that important, but being undefeated would be great.

The Coug's still don't know who they're playing but who ever they are, we will be sure to DOMINATE!

New Sports Coming Up!!!

We're all sad that volleyball, football and X-country are ending... but guess what there are still more. We can all be excited about LMS girls soccer and boys basketball! Hopefully there will be as BIG a turn out as last year for soccer. It's a good thing they're moving soccer to November so it wont be so cold.

Last year the boys basketball team had a good turnout hopefully it will be the same this year. Last year they won the majority of their games, Jr. varsity won and tied all their games and Varsity won half their games.

Halloween Dance!!!!!

BOO! Halloween is almost here! do you know what that means?! The Halloween dance is coming!!!!! So on October 30th at 2:15, slip on your Halloween costume and go to the dance!!!! Where you can hang out with your friends, eat some awesome food, and dance till you can't dance any more... well until 4:30 i guess.

The entry fee is $5 , but if you dress up you can get in for $4 (or with ASB card). the dance goes from 2:15, until 4:30.

Band is back in session for the year!! There is about 15 flutes overall, 30 clarinets, 28 trumpets, 13 trombones, 11 percussionists, plus a few other odd instruments including the euphonium, played by Ben Poirier. The Creepy Concert is coming up soon, so get your costumes on and be ready to rumble!! Be sure to mark you calendar for Oct. 23rd, because this one's gonna be a hit!

Be expecting tons of fun, food, and music...AND COSTUMES TOO! Make sure to pick out your best costume, because there's gonna be some competition! The 6th, 7th, 8th, and Jazz Band are planning to wear some pretty creepy costumes!

[Mr. Berquist and Taylor Morley] Go Mr. Berquist!
This year our pep assembly featured a Volleyball game between the 8th grade varsity team against the teachers. Sadly, the lady cougs lost the game. But this did give the teachers some pride to finally show that they still got it! Even our publications teacher, Mr. Snelling, participated!

We have these assemblys every year to kick off the school year and show of the members of the school sport teams. The football team preformed theirbefore- game- pumping- up- ritual [as Lennox puts it] that gets them all pumped up for their tough games. The Cross Country runners said their "Money In the Bank" slogan which is saying that every time you run the mile or run the graveyard you are adding money to your personal fitness bank account. The assembles also features Carly and Calvin our Cougar school mascots and the two sides of the gym battling it out in screaming; we've got spirit, yes we do, we've got spirit, how bout you?! The 8th grade and 7th grade side won this time :D

Have you seen the new little seats (some people call them tater tots) in the front of the school?? Well, they aren't really new but they are getting decorated! The art class last year worked hard to get all the tiles done to mosaic over the concrete. The decorations include flames, salmon, and some other designs. There are about 9 of these concrete cylinders with one very lucky one with a horseshoe on top. Also in art they are drawing and painting pictures out of comic books like Calvin and Hobbs, Garfield, etc. They sure are having a lot of fun in that class!! Look at these pictures we took!!

VOLLEYBALL!!!!

Volleyball is going on!!!!! We have been practicing for a while now and we have a pretty strong team. The 8th grade team got a new coach this year because Mandy -the coach from last year- got moved to the high school as the varsity coach! (YAY MANDY!) So we got a brand new coach, Becca! she’s very nice but can be strict when needed.

Our first game was on Monday in Lakewood, we were all nerves but we knew what to do come game day! once we saw the open gym with the nets all set up and the crowd buzzing with conversation, the adrenaline rush kicked-in and got us pumped for the game!
The 7th graders quickly warmed up and then got down to business. The Junior Varsity team for 7th grade won both of their games. The Varsity on the 7th grade team sadly didn't do as well... two out of their three games were lost, but luckily they won one.
After the 7th graders were done, the 8th grade stepped on the court. After warming up, the Junior Varsity team took their places. They won both of their games. Then the varsity again didn't do as well. Our first game wasn't the best, we had a bad start and it went down hill from there. The second game we won quickly with smiles on our faces, hoping we would do the same on our last game. Sadly, we lost the third (and last) game.
We are proud of the game, but are a bit disappointed we didn't win.

LMS football is back!

Our first 8th grade game was last Wednesday and we OWNED! The final score was 36 to 6. The game was an exciting first match for the Cougs. Camden Buchanan was the lead quarterback and led his team to victory.

Another player named Aaron C. also helped his team by scoring an amazing touchdown and tackling one of Coupville's players at the 5 yard line.

Elli interviewed Aaron and this is what he had to say :

Elli- " What are your feelings going into your first game?"
Aaron- " I feel excited , we've worked so hard for this first game."

Elli -"What d

s furtho you think your chances of winning are?"
Aaron- "I think chances are really high because last year we beat Coupville and I think we can do it again."

Elli- "How do you feel about the new 7th graders?"
Aaron- "I think the new 7th graders are looking really good, but I think they need to work on a few things to be perfect."
Elli-"How do you feel about having a girl on the team?"
Aaron- "I think having a girl on the team is awesome because it shows that they're brave and open to new things."

Elli -"What expectations do you have of the team?"

Aaron- "Expectations? I expect our team to do well and hopefully progres

er than last year."

Elli -"How do you like your position on the team?"

Aaron- "Offensive wise I love playing fullback because you get to run with the ball and you also get to hit people, and in defense I play linebacker and that's really fun too."

Elli-"Do you think you can go undefeated this year?"

Aaron- " Well that's a hard question, I mean I know we can go

undefeated if we try really hard and become a team."

Elli-"Are there any teams that might beat you?"

Aaron- "I don't think anyone can beat us but I think our toughest team is Kings cause they almost scored one us last year."

Elli-" Is there a lot of pressure to win your game?"

Aaron- " Not a whole lot of pressure , but you know, we have to do what we have to do and if there's pressure there's pressure."

Right now in Team Sports they are playing softball. As Carly says, "Most kids suck, but who doesn't? " Plenty of the kids have been hit with the ball but none of them have received serious injuries...yet.

Most of the kids are in it because they love the competition. As far as we saw everyone gets pretty tough. What can we say? They love sports =)

Sometimes Mr. J gets frustrated with the class and no one wants to see that. But all and all they tend to have a lot of fun! Also in Team Sports they are playing Flag Football, more practice time for the football team! Go Cougs! Now look at these awesome pictures.
